Naruto and Gaara have quite a few confrontations throughout Naruto_**'s runtime, but one of their most intense showdowns is surprisingly in a lesser-known installment from the anime franchise. When it comes to Naruto and Gaara's shared story beats, most viewers would likely recall their battle during the final stage of the Chunin Exams.

During this first major fight between the two characters, Gaara was primarily driven by a desire to seek validation and even intended to cause maximum destruction with his transformation into Shukaku. Naruto, on the other hand, was only starting to find his feet as a ninja during the showdown and showed immense progress to be able to protect his friends and the village.

The fight ultimately led to a dramatic shift in Gaara's narrative, turning him into one of Naruto's closest allies. Interestingly, though, this is not the only time the two characters get involved in a one-on-one fight in the series. A Naruto vs. Gaara showdown also unfolds in Naruto Shippuden the Movie: The Will of Fire, which premiered in 2009.

Naruto Vs. Gaara In Naruto Shippuden The Movie: The Will of Fire Explained

_

Set after episode 126 of Naruto: Shippuden_, Naruto Shippuden the Movie: The Will of Fire is the sixth movie in the overall Naruto franchise and third in the Shippuden series. The movie also features a brief but intense showdown between Gaara and Naruto where the two characters do not necessarily intend to kill each other but duke it out because of their own political and moral standings.

In the film, Kakashi possesses the Sharingan that the main villain, Hiruko, seeks to become invincible. To ensure Hiruko does not start a larger war and leaves the Hidden Leaf Village alone, Kakashi decides to sacrifice himself to the villain. However, Naruto, as always, steps in to protect his friends and refuses to let Kakashi go.

Naruto's decision to stop and protect Kakashi goes against an agreement made by the Five Great Nations, who feared that Hiruko could potentially start another ninja war. As the Kazekage, Gaara hopes to maintain the agreement, which prompts him to stop Naruto before he can make Kakashi change his mind.

In the fight that unfolds, Gaara does not simply go against Naruto out of spite or hubris. Instead, he feels responsible as an international leader. As the showdown begins, Gaara primarily plays defense instead of going all out. While Naruto tries to attack him, Gaara uses an array of sand techniques to keep Naruto at a distance.

Ultimately, though, Naruto's determination helps him overpower Gaara, and he ends up landing one solid punch towards the end. Since the two characters are not dead set on killing each other in this fight, its immediate stakes seem significantly lower. However, it still proves to be a gripping sequence that holds immense significance in the movie's overarching plot.

Naruto Vs. Gaara In The Will of Fire Is Not Canon

As compelling as the fight scene between Naruto and Gaara in the third Shippuden_ movie may seem, it is not canon to the main storyline since the movie exists outside the continuity of the original manga written by Masashi Kishimoto.

It serves more as a fun filler that reinstates how far both characters have come since their original clash in the Chūnin Exams arc and how, yet again, Naruto manages to change Gaara’s outlook on life by showing him the value of friendship and empathy.

Since the movie premiered in 2009, the overall quality of its animation is also far better than that of the first showdown between Naruto and Gaara. The first fight between the two characters has aged quite well and remains one of the most memorable duels of the series.

However, even the one in the non-canon Naruto_** movie is no less entertaining because of its fluid animation and emotional stakes for both characters. It does not add any heft to the original anime's existing lore but serves as a solid reminder of Naruto and Gaara's unique bond and moral evolution.
