A major Netflix** crime thriller series is returning to the streaming service soon, and it will continue to flesh out one of the streamer's biggest franchises. While Netflix's Original series are usually standalone, the streamer has had quite a few projects that started shared universes with several exciting releases. A recent example is how one of Netflix's best TV shows just received a popular animated prequel series.
That would be Stranger Things_, which served as Netflix's flagship show for a decade before coming to an end on December 31, 2025. This April, Netflix released the animated Stranger Things: Tales from '85, which is set between seasons 2 and 3 of the original show, following the kids' lost adventures. Other shows that spawned franchises with interconnected releases on Netflix include_ The Witcher_, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, Bridgerton, The Sandman, and more.
That franchise practice can also be associated with a hit topic on the streamer: crime thrillers. Some of Netflix's best thriller shows focus on nerve-wracking storylines with devilish killers being tracked by flawed and complex detectives. One of those shows happens to sit among Netflix's most popular releases of all time, and its spinoff will return soon.
The original show in question is Money Heist, known worldwide as La Casa de Papel, with its spinoff, Berlin, set to return for season 2 on May 15. After its first season dropped on the streaming service on December 29, 2023, the show is finally coming back to explore another heist with its title character, and it changes in one key way.
Netflix's Berlin Season 1 Expands One Of The Streamer's Biggest Franchises
_ Pedro Alonso in Berlin.
Money Heist _is one of Netflix's most beloved shows. The crime thriller series consists of five parts, which aired from May 2, 2017, to December 3, 2021. On Rotten Tomatoes, Money Heist holds a near-perfect 94% critics' score, also faring well with audiences at a high 81%. The show followed a group of bank robbers who attempt two of the most intricate and well-thought-out heists in TV history.
_Berlin _season 1 was released two years after the end of the popular Spanish show, with the spinoff being a prequel, set years before the events of Money Heist, and focused on one of the gang's original members, who is the character that gives the show its title. Primarily taking place in Paris, France, the 8-episode crime thriller series saw Berlin's gang try to steal €44 million worth of jewels.
The show brought back other characters from Money Heist, helping flesh out the franchise's history. Aside from Pedro Alonso's Berlin, the crime series included the returns of Itziar Ituño as Raquel Murillo and Najwa Nimri as Alicia Sierra, two bold investigators. Season 2 changes the game for the franchise, and it will also do so with the show's biggest return yet.
Berlin Season 2 Will Change The Netflix Crime Thriller Series
_Berlin _season 2 will bring back Álvaro Morte as Sergio Marquina, aka The Professor, who is Berlin's brother and the man behind all the heists in Netflix's Money Heist. While that is a major change in comparison to season 1, it is not the show's biggest. After all, Netflix has decided to separate _Berlin _into different shows, with season 1 dubbed Berlin and the Jewels of Paris. Following suit, season 2 has been titled Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine, with another eight episodes set to arrive on May 15.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Berlin season 1 holds a solid 70% critics' score.
Each season of the show is now displayed on Netflix as a standalone limited series that is part of the larger Money Heist Universe. While that could make it confusing for new viewers to find all seasons of the show, it makes sense, as season 2 follows a completely different heist, with Berlin's gang pretending to steal a painting, but instead targeting Berlin's blackmailers, the Duke and Duchess of Málaga. As such, Berlin's new season should be a good one.
