Shares of Micron Technology (MU) fell 23.9% between October 6 and November 4, 2026, a period when Intel and Western Digital stock also declined more than 20%. A 40% drop would not be new for Micron. The stock has fallen 40% or more in six of the 15 market shocks it has traded through since 2007. So how far does Micron stock fall on average when the market turns, and how long do the shares take to come back?

Across those 15 shocks, Micron stock fell 34.3% on average, more than twice the S&P 500’s average fall of 15.8% over the same dates. The deepest decline in these shocks occurred during the 2008-2009 financial crisis, when Micron lost 77% against a 53% drop for the S&P 500. During the 2022 inflation shock, the stock fell 49%, about twice the S&P 500’s 24% decline.

Recovering those losses has taken months and sometimes years. Measuring from the low of each shock, the shares required a median 7.4 months to regain their peak in that shock, fully rebounding after each of the 14 shocks in which they fell. In the single exception, the 2013 Taper Tantrum, the stock never closed below its starting price. Four of those recoveries required more than a year, including 17.3 months after the 2022 low. The slowest return followed the 2007 credit crunch, when the shares took 70.3 months from the low to regain their high.

Micron’s Margins Are Highest In Data Back To 2017

Micron reported $54.2 billion in revenue for fiscal Q4 2026, which ended September 3, a 379.3% increase from a year earlier. The company recorded an operating margin of 80.7% that quarter, compared with 32.3% the year before. Over the last twelve months, Micron posted a 74.6% operating margin, its highest twelve-month figure in data going back to fiscal 2017. As recently as fiscal Q1 2024, the company recorded a twelve-month operating loss equal to 39% of revenue.

The Cloud Memory Business Unit stood as Micron’s largest division in fiscal 2025, with revenue rising 256.6% that year to $13.5 billion. The company also holds far more cash than debt. On September 3, 2026, Micron held $43.4 billion of cash and short-term investments against $5.18 billion of debt. A year earlier, its debt stood at $14.6 billion.

Where Is Micron Under Pressure Now?

Micron faces a possible strike in Taiwan, at its largest manufacturing hub. The company’s Taoyuan union said on October 7, 2026, that its members had authorized a strike over a dispute about the company’s bonus scheme.

Costs are rising too. On the September 30, 2026 call, management said start-up costs would partly offset the gains from higher prices and a better mix, while tight market conditions should support results through 2028. Management also said that research and development spending, excluding incentive pay, will rise by more than $1 billion in fiscal 2027.

Price increases are set to slow as well. Management still expects margins to widen over the rest of fiscal 2027 from the first quarter, but with prices rising “at a more moderate pace.” For fiscal Q1 2027, Micron guided its gross margin to 86.0%, below the 86.8% it reported for fiscal Q4 2026. Micron is expected to report its fiscal Q1 2027 results in December 2026, and its gross margin against that guide is the figure to watch.
