David Fincher's acclaimed thriller Seven_ features one of the most acclaimed casts in movie history. Originally released in 1995, Seven impressed audiences worldwide with its clever writing and memorable twist. However, what made it stand out more than anything was its cast.
The actors chosen to bring the movie's characters to life elevated what could have been a fairly standard thriller. Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt, in particular, have become an iconic duo in entertainment thanks to their phenomenal platonic chemistry.
Even the side characters featured in Seven sculpted the movie into one of the most well-realized worlds in 90s filmmaking. Kevin Spacey was a major highlight by standing out as a terrifying antagonist. Even though he wasn't on-screen for most of the movie, his limited screen time struck fear in the hearts of audiences because of how cool and calculated he could be.
The performances, mixed with Fincher's phenomenal direction, culminated into one of the greatest thrillers of all time. Since its release though, each actor has found fame to some degree in their careers. While some have sadly passed on or have since taken a step back from acting, their roles in Seven ultimately played a major part in each of their lives, putting a spotlight on just how talented they could be.
Brad Pitt — David Mills
_ Brad Pitt from Seven and Now
Brad Pitt's leading role in Seven_ actually came off the heels of a major upturn in his career. While he had been active in acting since the 1980s, his role in 1994's Interview With The Vampire made him a major star in the mainstream. He joined the cast of Seven when he was 31 years old, playing the short-tempered detective David Mills as he tries to break his first case in his recently reassigned precinct.
Since Seven, Brad Pitt's career has only gotten more prevalent. He found himself in a variety of roles throughout the 2000s and 2010s, like Burn After Reading, Babel, Inglourious Basterds, and Moneyball.
In 2020, he earned his first acting Oscar thanks to his role as Cliff Booth in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood. After taking a starring role in 2025's F1, Pitt is now expected to reprise his award-winning role at 62 years old in Netflix's The Adventures of Cliff Booth.
Morgan Freeman — William Sommerset
_ Morgan Freeman in Seven and Now
Long before Seven_, Morgan Freeman had already become one of the biggest names in acting. His 1989 performance in Driving Miss Daisy, in particular, netted him one of many Oscar nominations before he signed on for Fincher's 1995 film.
However, his casting came at the absolute best time. Not too long after _Seven _started filming, 58-year-old Morgan Freeman's role in The Shawshank Redemption drew nothing but praise. This made David Fincher's movie a must-watch for fans of Freeman, and he absolutely delivered on his performance.
Today, Morgan Freeman continues to be a huge draw for audiences whenever his name is attached. He took on the role of Lucius Fox in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, as well as Thaddeus Bradley in the Now You See Me franchise. His latest work at 88-years-old is a main role in the series Special Ops: Lioness.
Kevin Spacey — John Doe
_ Kevin Spacey in Seven and Now
At only 36-years-old, Kevin Spacey managed to terrify countless audiences around the world for his intimidating performance as John Doe. Though his appearance was fairly limited, the way he appeared as an average man that could pull off such horrific murders made him one of the most interesting antagonists in the 1990s, with some even arguing him to be on par with Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of Hannibal Lecter.
Since Seven_, his career gained a major upturn. He managed to score an Oscar for Best Supporting actor the same year in The Usual Suspects, as well as Best Actor four years later for his role in American Beauty. Since then, he's appeared in various roles across genres, including House of Cards, Horrible Bosses, and Baby Driver.
In 2017 though, he faced serious sexual assault allegations, which led to him retiring from acting for nearly five years. Since then, most good faith he accrued has been lost by longtime fans. He has since returned to acting at 66-years-old though, but in small parts in lower-budget projects. However, he's expected to face more charges against him this year.
Gwyneth Paltrow — Tracy Mills
_ Gwyneth Paltrow in Seven and Now
23-year-old Gwyneth Paltrow didn't play a huge role in Seven_, but she's arguably become one of the most iconic parts of the film. She plays Detective Mills' wife, who's constantly depicted as alone while her husband is out solving cases. However, when John Doe leads Mills and Sommerset to the desert, they discover a box. When they open it, it's implied that Mills' wife's head is placed inside.
While her head is never seen, this has become one of the biggest twist endings in thriller history. It's a moment no one saw coming, and given how little she's shown, it gives John Doe ample time to kill her without Mills noticing.
Since her role in Seven, Gwyneth Paltrow has found modest success. She earned an Oscar for her role in _Shakespeare in Love _in 1998, and she became a superhero movie icon when she played Pepper Potts.
Today, at 53-years-old, Paltrow has taken a step back from acting. While she occasionally appears in projects like 2025's Marty Supreme, she primarily works as a philanthropist now, particularly with her controversial yet successful company, Goop.
R. Lee Ermey — Police Captain
_ R. Lee Ermey in Seven and 2018
R. Lee Ermy became well known for his role as grumpy and cruel authority figures when he played Sergeant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket_. Since then, he became typecast to play similar roles. Seven was no different as he played Mills and Sommerset's superior captain. While he gave a fairly similar performance, the 51-year-old Ermey still delivered on his role with a more toned-back performance in comparison.
Ermey would continue to act until he passed away at 74-years-old in 2018. Some of his most notable performances would include the Green Army Man named Sarge in the Toy Story franchise, as well as Sheriff Hoyt in 2003's remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and its 2006 prequel.
John C. McGinley — California
_ John C. McGinley in Seven and Now
When it comes to the big screen, John C. McGinley has had a fairly subdued yet consistent career. He's been featured in countless films, big and small, in minor roles, including 1986's Platoon_ and 1989's Born Again on the Fourth of July.

When he joined Seven_ at 36 years old, he wound up playing the leader of the SWAT team, California. He played a vital part in serving as the audience surrogate, commenting on the murders as he follows Mills and Sommerset to various crime scenes.
While his appearances in film have been small, McGinley has since become a big star on television. He's best known for playing Perry Cox in Scrubs, as well as Tom Card in Burn Notice's sixth season. Now, at 66-years-old, McGinley has reprised his role as Perry Cox in the _Scrubs _reboot on Hulu.
Richard Roundtree — Martin Talbot
_ Richard Roundtree in Seven and 2023
Long before 53-year-old Richard Roundtree took his role as District Attorney Martin Talbot in Seven_, he was a major star of the Blaxploitation movement in the 1970s. His most iconic role was undeniably as John Shaft in Shaft, an off-the-book private investigator who goes by his own rules to fight criminals.
His role in Seven was a huge achievement for the film, as it drew in fans of Roundtree's heyday in the 70s. Since then, he found modest work in other projects, both big and small, including the Wachowski Sisters' _Speed Racer _and Rian Johnson's debut film, Brick. He even made a return in future _Shaft _projects starring Samuel L. Jackson and Jessie T. Usher.
Unfortunately, Richard Roundtree passed away in 2023 at the age of 81. However, his career continues to live on through his iconic work, including as a member of David Fincher's Seven**, whose cast continues to be just as incredible now as it was back in 1995.
