Is Exxon Mobil Stock Still Worth Owning After Its Quarter?

Shares of Exxon Mobil (XOM) rose 2.2% on October 30, 2026, the day it reported fiscal Q3 2026 results, while the S&P 500 fell 1.8%. The stock retreated by November 4, trading 7.6% below its close on the eve of the report. Shareholders own Exxon for profits and payouts that endure through the oil cycle, and its profit just jumped. So is that higher profit Exxon’s own, or the market’s?

So far, more of it looks like the market’s. Exxon earned $15.4 billion in fiscal Q3 2026, against $7.55 billion a year earlier. The company earned $4.18 billion in fiscal Q1 2026, meaning the whole step up arrived in the last two quarters. Fiscal Q2 2026 profit was already $14.5 billion.
Management said a lack of supply led to tight markets and higher prices. Its guess was that fuel markets would not get back closer to normal until well through 2027, or longer. Chevron and ConocoPhillips shares rose by similar amounts on report day, so the quarter did little to set Exxon apart from its peers.
Exxon does have gains of its own. Management cited $16.9 billion of structural cost savings since 2019. Setting aside Middle East impacts, executives said production rose from a year earlier, helped by growth in the Permian and Guyana. Those savings accumulated over several years, while the higher profit has lasted just two quarters.

Payouts Are Covered By Exxon’s Cash Flow For Now
Exxon’s payouts hold up so far. The company returned $9.4 billion to holders through dividends and buybacks in fiscal Q3 2026, against $18.5 billion of free cash flow.
Management raised the dividend per share 4%, marking its 44th straight year of increases. The company also plans to keep buybacks at $20 billion in 2027, assuming reasonable market conditions. Exxon carries light debt as well, at 4.9% of its market value against 19.2% for the S&P 500.
What Happened After Exxon’s Last Profit Peak?
Profit fell by more than a third, and the payouts kept going. Exxon earned $51.9 billion in the twelve months to September 2022, and $30.0 billion in the twelve months to September 2025.
During that leaner year, free cash flow of $23.8 billion landed only a little above the $20.7 billion Exxon spent on buybacks alone. Total payouts of $37.9 billion ran well above free cash flow with $17.2 billion of dividends included. Management said that at the bottom of the cycle, Exxon does not pull back from its commitment to holders and uses the balance sheet to make up the difference. The company has less cash to draw on now, holding $12.2 billion at the end of September 2026, against $30.4 billion four years earlier.
Apart from buybacks, management left its 2027 plan to a later date. The company said it will confirm key 2027 planning figures in a press release later in fiscal Q4 2026, offering more detail on its fourth-quarter call in January.
Cash flow covered Exxon’s payouts in fiscal Q3 2026, while the company has held its higher profit for only two quarters. Its quarterly profit at the fourth-quarter report, expected in January 2027, is the number to watch.
