From October 7 to November 5, 2026, Vertiv (VRT) stock fell 28.3%, compared with a 5.7% decline for the S&P 500. Peers Eaton and nVent Electric lost ground over those same dates, dropping 24.2% and 41.3% respectively, while a third peer, Emerson Electric, gained 2.1%. Vertiv’s sales rose 61% from a year earlier in the third quarter of 2026, and holders may expect shares of a business growing that fast to hold up when the market turns. So how far have Vertiv shares fallen when the whole market fell?

Across the six market shocks the company has traded through, Vertiv shares have fallen 36.9% on average, compared with a 16.8% drop for the S&P 500 over the same dates. During the 2020 COVID-19 crash, the stock fell 59%, while the index lost 34%. The 2025 US tariff shock saw the stock drop 45%, against 19% for the index. The summer-fall 2023 yield shock provided the one exception: Vertiv shares slipped 2.6% while the index shed 9.5%.

Each time, though, Vertiv shares have bounced back. At the median, the shares were back at their peak close 1.4 months after the low, and the longest wait was 12 months. At its November 5 close, the stock stood 53% below its highest close of the past year, which was set on May 14, 2026. That close was $176.73, and a repeat of the 36.9% average shock fall would take the shares to about $112.

Big falls hit the whole market too: the Nasdaq dropped 5.5% on November 5. Here’s what came next the last 21 times.

Vertiv’s Sales Are Growing Faster Than A Year Ago

Over the twelve months to September 30, 2026, Vertiv’s sales grew 35.3% to $13.1 billion, outpacing the 28.8% growth from the twelve months before. Operating profit grew faster than sales during the third quarter of 2026, when the operating margin was 23.0%, up from 20.5% a year earlier.

Vertiv also held $3.71 billion of cash against $3.36 billion of debt on September 30, 2026. A year earlier, its $3.21 billion in debt exceeded its $1.94 billion of cash. On October 27, Vertiv paid about $1.45 billion in cash for UtilityInnovation Group, adding microgrid controls to its power and cooling portfolio. If that business meets its earnings targets over the next two years, Vertiv will pay up to $1.15 billion more. The upfront payment alone was larger than the amount by which cash exceeded debt on September 30.

What Vertiv’s Management Flagged In October

On its October 28, 2026 call, management said that $100 million to $150 million of third-quarter sales had been delayed from the second quarter, meaning part of the third quarter’s jump came from the quarter before.

Management also cited power availability, permitting and a shortage of skilled site labor as limits on the pace of data center building, but said they are not slowing Vertiv’s growth. Management added that a large increase in capacity in the Americas during the second half is bringing some inefficiency there.

Leaving out acquisitions, third-quarter orders more than doubled from a year earlier, management said, and on the same call it said Vertiv will stop sharing orders data. With orders no longer reported, Vertiv’s fourth-quarter net sales are the figure to watch against its guide of $4.31 billion to $4.51 billion when the company reports in February 2027.
