Developers have been getting even more aggressive about keeping their communities updated on Steam**. Often, it's common to learn about a new game, get a clear release date with a wishlist option, and see regular updates in blog posts. If you're into something, you can dive into blog posts and potentially alter the course of the game through Early Access.
It makes it extremely easy to learn about games before they're released, but that sort of marketing is needed to stand out in an era when hundreds of games grace Steam every month. If we're talking RPGs, it can get even harder to discern what the game's systems are or what its monetization style is. The bigger the scope of the game, the harder it can be to pin down.

Over on Steam, there's a new free open-world RPG that's out now, and it manages to mix Skyrim_ and Valheim in an interesting way. It's a hard combo to pull off, but you can see for yourself if it clears that bar.

Available on Steam now, you can download Myth of Empires: Throne_ for free. It's described as a "seasonal multiplayer warfare sandbox," and it's out worldwide. With a roadmap extending to mid-January 2027, it seems the studio is in it for the long haul.
Here's the full breakdown of what to expect from Myth of Empires: "Explore vast lands inspired by multiple civilizations, tame creatures, forge powerful weapons, and build your guild. Lead cross-server expeditions, conquer territories, and compete with players worldwide for the ultimate throne."
Reviews are split, with some loving the game: "Right from the start, the game scratches that satisfying loop of collecting materials, crafting stuff, and slowly building up your base. There’s something incredibly relaxing about chopping wood, mining resources, and watching your little empire grow piece by piece. It’s cozy, it’s chill, and honestly, it’s the kind of gameplay I can sink hours into without even noticing the time."
And others are harsher: "Either way, I've given this game as much time as I'm willing to expend on it. If it wasn't free, I'd be requesting a refund." "Having just one active PvE server might save this game," a user writes.

If you're an RPG fan who is also fond of basebuilders, it could be worth giving Myth of Empires_ a shot. The seasonal model should also hopefully result in iterative changes over time, including a potential PVE server.
For now, you can pick up the PVP-heavy Myth of Empires on Steam. If you're an RPG fan, there's no shortage of games to try.
